Historical essays chiefly reflecting research in the upstate S.C. Counties of Union and Spartanburg, with transcriptions of letters, memoirs and reminiscencess dating to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, includes historical sketches of churches, schools, events and individuals, originally published in S.C. newspapers; these features were transcribed, typed and bound by WPA employees as part of the Federal Writers' Project in Spartanburg Co. and Union Co., S.C. Topics discussed include history of the Union LIbrary Society; stories of festivities in honor of May Day during antebellum and Reconstruction periods at various schools for young women (Limestone Springs Institute, Spartanburg Female College, Reidville Female College, Unionville Female Academy, and elsewhere); account of the flight by hot-air balloon from Cincinnati (Ohio) to Kelton (in Union County, S.C.), by Professor T[haddeus] S[obieski] C[onstantine] Lowe during early days of Civil War; upon landing in S.C., on 20 Apr. 1861, Lowe was thought to be a spy, but men familiar with his scientific work arranged for him to cross the border to return to the north (transcribed from accounts published, 16 May 1861, in the Carolina Spartan, which had reprinted the account from a Cincinnati newspaper). Long series consists of a transcribed memoir published serially in a newspaper during the 1850s: "Historic Views of Spartanburg or Facts and Figures of Eighty Years," by "Derwent," published 27 Mar. - 15 May 1856 in the Carolina Spartan newspaper; other memoris include that of Rev. Joseph B. Cottrell, a Methodist minister.
